Politics Are Ruining the NFL and Splitting People Apart

By Andreas Fanos on October 24, 2017

Anyone who watches football can tell that the game has gotten less and less about the great sport. Turning on a television now to watch ESPN or another sports channel is revolved around politics, specifically the protests against the anthem.

Politics have taken over the media and it is annoying to try and watch sports and have it be all about the protesting. Media is very important to society and it should be looking to get better and not worse and stay true to itself; it is not doing that right now. Sports should be about sports in general and always should be.

Other than the NFL being unpredictable this year, it has also caused a shift among its players and fans. The National Anthem protest has created two sides to the issue, to kneel or stand for the flag. It was started by Colin Kaepernick who protested the injustices of the country by kneeling. Some people believe that it is disrespectful to the military and irrelevant to what they are trying to do, while others believe it is protesting the extreme injustices and racism in the country.

In my opinion, the players should be able to do whatever they want — if they want to kneel or stand. Personally, I believe it is not disrespectful because there is obviously a lot of corruption and injustices done on a daily basis. Racism is real and people of color are treated unfairly by the police and by others. Hopefully someday in the future, all of this can stop and everyone can be treated equally.

Freedom of speech is a fundamental right and it is being abused and treated as nonexistent in this era. The players should not be judged for doing what they want and voicing their own opinion. It is a right to be able to speak without constraint or malice towards another. Nobody should have to suffer for voicing themselves and expressing their own views.

Because Colin Kaepernick voiced his opinion, he does not have a job currently in the league and he is better than a lot of starting quarterbacks in the league currently. He is better than Jay Cutler for example, but no team wants to sign him due to the distractions and problems he causes. We see how using your right to freedom of speech can affect your outcome or job.

Having Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States of America has also caused one of the biggest shifts in American history. The Vietnam war and some other moments stand as a higher rate of shifts and separation. The situation is good and bad, and we should not focus on the bad side of it all. Hopefully, he will do good for the country and leave a lasting image for many.

There is still hope left for the game of football and for the shape of the nation in general. We all must stay together through this rough patch and look towards the future. This country is too incredible to have no hope at all. If the media does not stop its current agenda, the rating and viewers will decline. NBA is the sport to invest in and watch for years to come.
