Review of 21 Savage and Offset's Halloween Mixtape "Without Warning"

By Andreas Fanos on November 8, 2017

One of the most prolific and sought out producers made a tape with some of the greatest rappers around today. And the culmination was a surprise Halloween mixtape called “Without Warning,” which serves as a perfect name for the tape. All three of the stars shine in this mixtape and each serves their own individual purpose and plays to their own strengths.

Some highlight tracks are the first track, “Ghostface Killers,” with energetic rapper Travis Scott and second song, “Rap Saved Me,” with highly requested featured artist Quavo, who is one of the Migos members. More standout tracks are “Ric Flair Drip,” “Darth Vader,” and song “Still Serving.” “Rap Saved Me,” is behind by a split second, with “Still Serving,” being my favorite where Offset and 21 Savage compliment one another and trade nice lyrics.

Right from the start of the work it comes out blazing and sinister with 21 Savage and Offset trading bars. It is a fun tape filled with nice beats. Metro Boomin deserves an applause for the sound effects and beats he has crafted for this work. The beats are sinister, gnarly, and the sounds follow the scary holiday vibe. There are even references to “Friday the 13th” and “Nightmare on Elm Street.” There are jump scares in the beats.

The few featured artists that make an appearance like Quavo and Travis Scott make their time and verses count. I personally do not like 21 Savage and how he raps in general, but he has some very good lines in this tape. Metro Boomin plays to Savage’s strength of hazy and slow rapping. Offset raps with a fury and rapid speed to bring the songs to full force.

Two of the most legendary rappers in the game also dropped a collaboration mixtape labeled “Super Slimey;” Future and Young Thug dropped this red-hot mixtape that had a lot of swagger and confidence.

Fellow Migos member Offset has been all over the place with his recent marriage to Cardi B and being featured on other artists’ work. He is even featured on Future and Young Thug’s tape. I will say that I liked Future and Young Thug’s tape “Super Slimey” a bit more than “Without Warning.” Both of the tapes are a bit similar in how they function as a short fun work.

The Migos have been all over the place dropping their hot track “MotorSport,” with Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. They also made an announcement after dropping the lead single that “Culture 2″ is on the way. Album “Culture” was highly acclaimed and the sequel to it will be as well. The Migos are a good group and bring a lot of energy and it is hard to say that they have not influenced the rap genre.

“Without Warning,” lives up to its name in hype and value with the cover of dogs barking. It is not very lyrical and does not have anything to make you think, but it is entertaining. It does have some great hooks and good one-liners though just like “Super Slimey.” The biggest problem for both of these tapes is substance, but they are both heavily entertaining. I do think that Future’s tape brings more energy than this one.

“Without Warning” is produced by one of the best in the rap game and sets out what it wished to accomplish. It does not overstay its welcome being only 33 minutes long, so the short length serves its purpose here. It gives fans and others a fun tape and answers fan’s questions of Offset and 21 Savage making a tape together.
