Is Rapper 6ix9ine/Tekashi's "DAY69" Tape Worth the Listen?

By Andreas Fanos on March 5, 2018

There are obvious reasons why rapper 6ix9ine has been able to blow up. An obvious one is his appearance with colorful hair, teeth, and tattoos all over his face and body. The underground New York artist honestly to me looks like an alien from outer space, but that is how some modern rappers have been looking in this day and age.

I do not like his music or message that he brings to the world, but I put that all to the side to see how the project was and to my prediction; I was not surprised by the horrible quality. Everything that I have been saying about this artist proved true.

Tekashi or 6ix9ine has had tremendous success by just releasing singles, but he has finally dropped his debut tape “Day69,” which to me does not impress, but shows that he is successful for his appearance, instead of for talent. He sports an aggressive style with a lot of screaming. 6ix9ine does the same here, there is no lyricism at all here and he uses the featured artists to save him. I like aggressive style rappers like Meek Mill, Eminem, Denzel Curry, and 6ix9ine does not touch their talent one bit. Either way, the featured artists can not even save the tape. It is a shame that it is a bad project because the production on the tape is pretty good for the most part, but 6ix9ine in my opinion just fails to deliver on all counts. Almost any other artist would have had better bars with this amount of great production.

The tape starts off with a good intro track called “BILLY,” where 6ix9ine raps with his anger starting off the vibe of the project. The problem is that what follows is just simply not good behind terrible lyrics. The beats carry the project 100% though, and that is not even enough to save it. Already released track “GUMMO,” is an alright song that has again, a nice beat but that’s it. Tory Lanez gives a good verse on next song “RONDO.”

The other tracks are just not important for the most part as 6ix9ine tries to rap, although, he just raps about the same topic twice over, about killing people and promoting violence. There is no substance behind his lyrics and he does not give us any information about his come up or his story. “KEKE,” is an alright song, but once again his quests out rap/sing the supposedly acclaimed star.

Now I personally like angry music and artists that bring it, but this artist just has no substance or good lyrics at all. An example is the song ”DOOWEE,” where he screams the word “Yea,” for longer than 20 seconds. And again, over a great beat, he is just able to talk badly about others and beating up people and reverts back to saying “Yea,” for the rest of the song length. If you truly listen he is not saying anything that will make you think and he repeats the same words throughout. I do not like his voice tone or screaming that he does in his music. And more annoying he screams a catchphrase on each song. This artist is, in my opinion, is worse than Lil Pump, and others.

On “KOODA,” and “MOOKY,”  he does the same, rapping to the haters and his friends staying with him no matter what. On last track “CHOCOLATE,” it has a very interesting beat, but yet again 6ix9ine ruins it with his lyrics. What I will say good about the project is how different it is and how good the production is. Other than that I’m not impressed with its lackluster lyrics and same topics. The evidence points it out with each song being short, and thank god for that. I like the remixed song “GUMMO,” where Migos superstar Offset gives a great verse behind the good beat.

The project to me shows an angry soul, for what exact reasoning I don’t understand. The production and some of the features are good, but not enough to hold the tape. Repetitions of beating people up and killing them don’t bode well for being peaceful and spreading good messages.

There are so many other great tapes and projects to listen to rather than “DAY69.” Projects like Tory Lanez’s “MEMORIES DON’T DIE,” is an example and the “Black Panther,” album too. If you want to listen to an album to laugh too or just waste time, then go ahead. The project is only 27 minutes long so it won’t waste too much time to listen to. Overall, this tape is a project to listen to one time or two and move on or completely pass. Listen at your own discretion.
